Settlements of Marmari
In Marmari and around its villages you will find a number of taverns and ouzeries, monuments and other sights of interest, numerous beaches ideal for fishing and diving, beautiful gorges and footpaths for trekking and much more. The region of Marmari includes, the isles of Petalie and a great number a small settlements most of which bear the names of the old families originating from Greeks from Albania that had populated the up to then deserted Southern Evia during the times of the Venetian and Turkish rule.
Keratsoni, Paradisis, Melissonas, Stoupaei, Aghio Dimitrios, Akteo, Giannitsi, Kallianos, Aghios Konstantionos, Likorema, Beach of Figeas, Figeas, Chersonisi, Mamalia, Karaei, Friganeo, Alekses, Chania, Diastavrose, Kissos, Cherodenamos, Galana, Bathaei, Gothe, Vardaei, Varelaei, Vatesio, Rizovouni, Pothi, Logothetis, Babas, Mizides, Goufsides, Agathos, Vlahos, Kalergon, Lenosaei, Sotiras.
The visit to the settlements of the municipality of Marmari, especially those who are in the inner land, present a great interest. The visitor can observe many facts that point to the past and origins of their habitants. Old buildings, practicing of old traditional crafts - that in other regions have been lost or developed in something else - traditional homemade cooking recipes and much more.
Especially the country style tasteful dishes, we recommended to the visistors to try them out in some of the taverns of the villages.
These, of course that draw the attention to the visitors are the traces of the many old and newest quarries from which the famous green marble of Southern Evia was drug up and gave its name to the municipality and its capital. This marble has decorated the most ancient and glorious cities of the Mediterranean.
It goes without saying that in the region like Marmari, that uses the sea as one of its great advantages, the visitors can enjoy tasty delicacies coming from the marine fauna that is plentiful in the area. There are a lot of taverns by the sea as much in Marmari as in the surrounding beaches.
Aghios Dimitrios
Aghios Dimitrios village is situated 19 km northeast of Marmari, at an altitude of 350m, on the slopes of Mt Repeza. Above the village of Aghios Dimitrios rises one of the peaks of Ochi, Boublia (1127m), and on the northeast side Mt Platanos (1017m). A marked footpath starts from the village and ascends through clumps of perennial chestnut trees, plane trees and holm oaks. The gorges of Aghios Dimitrios and Dimossari are not far from here. Aghios Dimitrios gorge and the river that flows through it (Porfira river) end at the beach of Schinodavlia, on the Aegean Sea. Some of the special features of this beautiful beach are the caves and the stalactites at either end of the beach.
Akteo
Akteo village is situated some 17 km northeast of Marmari at an altitude of 360m in a lush environment, with beautiful views of the peaks of Ochi and the Aegean. The remains of the Castle of Akteo and the nearby Castle of Filagra, the old churches of Koimisis Theotokou and Aghios Ioannis Theologos are some of the sights worth visiting.
Giannitsi
Giannitsi is a small village situated some 16 km northeast of Marmari, built on the slopes of Mt Ochi, at an altitude of 275m. Mt Keratoura dominates the area while the water sources of the surrounding peaks form Megalo Rema – a river that runs past the village and terminates at Limionas (or Giannitsi) beach which is easily accessible by car. Not far from the village we find some remarkable natural sights, like the gorge of Aghios Dimitrios, clumps of perennial oak trees and the almost inaccessible cliffs of Sara. The Castle of Filagra, the remains of Steno fort, the churches of Aghios Charalambos, Aghios Serafim and Evangelismos Theotokou are some of the nearby interesting sights.
Kallianou and Lenosaei
The villages of Kallianou and Lenosaei sre situated some 31-32 km northeast of Marmari. They are built on the slopes of Mt Ochi, alongside the renowned gorge of Dimossari. A cobbled path which starts from Lenosaei runs through the gorge and ends on the beautiful beach of Kallianou. The whole area is also renowned for its top-quality honey, the rose honey or “Gioulbali” in the local dialect. The church of Theotokos in Lenosaei is one of the sights which are well worth a visit.
Paradisi
The village of Paradisi is situated some 9 km northeast of Marmari, at an altitude of 260m, in a lush gorge covered in chestnut, cherry and oak trees and with abundant running water. Its quaint stone-built houses, the delicious local products supplied by the few remaining farmers and the traditional festivities of St John Prodromos on August 29 are some of the reasons to visit this village.
